Sorolla Museum in Madrid to partially reopen after expansion
The Sorolla Museum in Madrid is set to partially reopen on October 15 following a two-year closure for a €14 million expansion and restoration project. While the artist Joaquín Sorolla’s historic residence and atelier will remain closed for further restoration, the first phase of the project is complete.
The expansion includes a new 1,698 square meter facility featuring additional exhibition spaces, an auditorium, and storage facilities. The inaugural exhibition, ‘Behind the Artist’s House: The Architecture of the Sorolla Museum, 1905–2026’, will explore the building's history.
The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Sorolla’s work, including over 1,300 paintings and 5,000 drawings. Director Enrique Valera noted that the expansion was necessary to address functional challenges and improve visitor services after the museum saw a 40% increase in attendance in 2023.
