Madrid faces rising costs for students in transport and education

Residents of the Community of Madrid are facing increased costs for both transportation and education as the new academic year begins.

A new regulation implemented by the regional government under Isabel Díaz Ayuso requires individuals to be registered on the municipal roll (padrón) to access youth transit passes and other personal transport titles. This measure significantly impacts students moving to the region from other provinces, as those under 26 who are not registered residents may see their commuting costs for metro, bus, and commuter train services increase by up to six times.

Additionally, data from the Spanish Association of Consumers (Asescon) indicates that the ‘back to school’ season is more expensive in Madrid than in any other Spanish region. For public school students, the estimated cost is 756 euros, compared to the national average of 635 euros. Costs for subsidized (concertado) and private schools are also higher in Madrid, reaching 825 euros and 1,923 euros respectively.
