Madrid Mayor Martínez-Almeida Announces South‑Side Development and 90,000 Affordable Homes

Mayor José Luis Martínez‑Almeida said Madrid has improved infrastructure, public spaces and quality of life over the past three years, with resident satisfaction at 7.8. He outlined four main challenges for the capital, prioritising the southern districts. The "Abroñigal" area will become a major growth pole, with the city planning to unlock land and streamline regulations to build up to 90,000 affordable housing units, positioning Madrid as the first European city to achieve such a scale of low‑cost housing.

The mayor also called on the national Housing Ministry to resolve a court ruling that cancelled the tourist‑housing registry, arguing that the instrument remains useful. He stressed the need for continued investment to preserve Madrid’s neighbourhood character while pursuing its global city ambitions.
