Ceuta migrant crisis: Protests in Madrid demand security and border reinforcement

Thousands of people gathered in Madrid on October 25 to support the 'Mujeres Caballas' movement, protesting the ongoing impact of the mass migration event that occurred in Ceuta in late July 2026. Protesters demanded increased border security, greater state presence, and reforms to immigration laws to facilitate repatriations.

Juan Jesús Vivas, President of Ceuta, joined the demonstration, stating that the city has not returned to normalcy three months after the influx. He reported that approximately 15,000 migrants remain in the city, representing about 20% of its usual population. Vivas noted a 60% increase in crime, a 400% increase in health emergencies, and a five-point drop in the local GDP.

In response to the crisis, Spanish authorities have conducted operations to relocate migrants. Recently, security forces evacuated approximately 200 people from garages and rooftops in the El Príncipe neighborhood. Since August 10, a total of 13,101 people have been returned to Morocco.
