Madrid provides emergency aid to wildlife after Sierra Oeste fires

The Community of Madrid has launched an emergency relief operation to support wildlife following a forest fire in the Sierra Oeste region that destroyed 7,100 hectares of land in July.

To date, authorities have distributed over 55,000 kilograms of food and 50,000 liters of water across six municipalities: San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Pelayos de la Presa, Navas del Rey, Robledo de Chavela, Villa del Prado, and Fresnedillas de la Oliva. The food supplies include 45,120 kilograms of alfalfa, 10,000 kilograms of corn, and 1,000 natural salt stones. The distribution of corn is expected to continue for several weeks.

Water access is being managed through the installation of 47 large 1,000-liter tanks for big animals and 47 smaller 80-liter tanks for smaller species. The public company Canal de Isabel II has provided 15,000-liter cisterns to assist with the initial supply. The placement of resources was determined by studies on animal movement and monitoring systems to ensure accessibility for the affected species.
