Madrid region expands water‑usage alerts and fire‑relief assistance

The Community of Madrid has used Canal de Isabel II’s NB‑IoT telemetered water meters to alert more than 69,000 households to unusual consumption patterns. The system now covers 93 % of the region’s 1.55 million meters and has saved water equivalent to over 6,000 Olympic pools. Automatic alerts have helped detect leaks, saving about 37 hm³ of water (roughly 11,000 pools) and allowing users to set personalized consumption thresholds.

In response to the recent wildfires that devastated the Sierra Oeste, the regional government has activated a recovery package that includes direct grants of up to €10,000 for affected businesses and self‑employed workers, a €15 million fund, and free guarantees through Avalmadrid. Tax exemptions for inheritance, donation, and property‑transfer duties apply to the purchase of replacement assets, and Canal de Isabel II will reduce the variable part of water bills by 80 % for fire‑impacted customers for one year. The measures aim to rebuild infrastructure, support families, and sustain the agricultural and primary‑sector economy of the region.
