Madrid wildfire relief response

In the weeks after the devastating wildfires that swept the Sierra Oeste, Madrid authorities rolled out a series of emergency measures.

On 29 July, the national Council of Ministers approved a suspension of administrative and procedural deadlines for displaced residents, preventing loss of legal rights. The Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) set up emergency legal‑aid offices in Navalcarnero and San Lorenzo de El Escorial to help citizens navigate insurance claims, public aid, housing issues and work‑absence documentation.

A week later, on 7 August, the Community of Madrid expanded its response. Canal de Isabel II’s NB‑IoT water‑meter network was used to alert more than 69,000 households to abnormal consumption, saving water equivalent to thousands of Olympic pools and detecting leaks. The regional government also launched a recovery package that includes direct grants of up to €10,000 for affected businesses and self‑employed workers, a €15 million fund, tax exemptions for asset replacement, and an 80 % reduction in the variable part of water bills for fire‑impacted customers for one year. These steps aim to rebuild infrastructure, support families and sustain the agricultural sector.
