Isabel Díaz Ayuso launches recovery plan as Sierra Oeste wildfire devastates Madrid region
The Sierra Oeste wildfire in the Community of Madrid has scorched roughly 22,000 hectares, destroyed at least 43 homes and badly damaged about 300 more, and forced the evacuation of more than 55,000 residents across 15 municipalities. Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso announced a "recovery inédita" plan that will begin while the fire is still active. The plan includes the repair of over 100 km of damaged roads on 13 designated routes, the deployment of five mobile citizen offices to 15 shelters to provide administrative and psychological assistance, and a one‑million‑euro emergency aid package for affected families.
Ayuso also confirmed the distribution of 300,000 kg of forage and ten 1,000‑liter water tanks to sustain roughly 1,000 livestock on affected farms, together with stricter access controls for genuine livestock owners. International assistance has arrived, with aerial units from Greece and Italy and more than 100 Portuguese army personnel supporting the firefighting effort. The regional government has coordinated with the national authorities, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the command centre, endorsing a unified command for the Madrid, Ávila and Toledo emergencies. Mobile offices and psychological services are now operating in 15 accommodation points, while the fire continues to threaten the region.
