Madrid wildfire response & recovery

Entities: Isabel Díaz Ayuso · Greek Air Force · Community of Madrid · Sierra Oeste wildfire · Spanish Government

Overview

In late July 2026 a massive wildfire burned through the southwest of the Community of Madrid, prompting mass evacuations and the conversion of sports facilities in Alcalá de Henares and Alcobendas into emergency shelters. The fire, identified as the Sierra Oeste blaze, had scorched roughly 22,000 ha, destroyed at least 43 homes and damaged about 300 more, and forced more than 55,000 residents from 15 municipalities to seek refuge.

Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso announced a "recovery inédita" plan while the fire was still active. The plan includes a €1 million emergency aid package for affected families, repair of over 100 km of roads on 13 designated routes, and the deployment of five mobile citizen offices to the 15 shelters to provide administrative, psychological and health services. Livestock assistance consists of 300,000 kg of forage, ten 1,000‑liter water tanks and stricter access controls for genuine owners, aimed at supporting roughly 1,000 animals.

International help arrived with aerial units from Greece and Italy and more than 100 Portuguese army personnel. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the command centre, endorsing a unified command covering emergencies in Madrid, Ávila and Toledo. Mobile offices and psychological services are now operating in all accommodation points, while the blaze continues to threaten the region.
