Madrid's San Isidro Bullfighting Festival records historic triumphs and serious cornada
On Sunday, 31 May 2026, the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid opened for a marquee bullfighting card of the San Isidro Fair. The programme featured Antonio Ferrera, Manuel Escribano and Paco Ureña. Ferrera delivered a standout performance, earning two ears and a "puerta grande" after cutting the ears of two bulls and even taking the puya himself. Diego Urdiales also secured a "puerta grande" with a classical style.
The afternoon turned dramatic when torero Paco Ureña suffered a grave cornada. The bull’s horn pierced the left thigh/inguinal area, creating a 20‑centimetre wound that reached the iliac spine and also injured the femoral artery. Ureña was taken to surgery after initially refusing medical aid. More than 23,000 spectators attended the event, which is part of the San Isidro Fair running from 8 May to 14 June and includes dozens of bullfights, novilladas and rejoneo shows. Tickets ranged from €48 to €244, and the corrida was broadcast live on the TeleMadrid platform TLMad and made available on‑demand for a week.
