Madurai police book headmistress for abetment of suicide
Madurai Police have registered an FIR against the headmistress of a Government Model Higher Secondary School in Usilampatti following the suicide of a 16-year-old Dalit student, P Nisanthi.
The incident occurred after Nisanthi and her mother, P Thavamani, visited the school on August 24 to seek admission for Class XI. According to the complaint, the headmistress, identified as Vimala, allegedly humiliated the student and ordered them to leave the premises after a disagreement regarding the mother’s manner of seeking admission. While the student’s uncle, P Sangili, alleges that a casteist remark was made during the encounter, police noted that the formal complaint did not explicitly mention caste-related remarks.
The student died by suicide on August 25. Following the death, the police altered the initial suicide case to include charges of abetment of suicide against the headmistress. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and consulting the Revenue Department, while the District Child Welfare Committee and the District Education Department conduct separate inquiries.
