Madurai: Student suicide leads to SC/ST Act case against headmistress

A 16-year-old student in Usilampatti, Madurai district, committed suicide following a confrontation with a school headmistress. The incident reportedly began when the student objected to the headmistress reprimanding her mother for standing with folded hands during a discussion regarding a transfer certificate.

According to reports, the headmistress reacted angrily to the student’s remarks, questioning her attitude and suggesting she had been expelled from previous schools. Distressed by the encounter, the student returned home and took her own life the following evening.

Following the death, a case has been registered under the SC/ST Act. The victim's family alleges that the headmistress insulted the student and her mother based on their caste identity.
