Maersk and CMA CGM implement new shipping surcharges
Major shipping companies Maersk and CMA CGM are implementing new Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) across various global trade routes, impacting freight costs for importers.
Maersk announced that starting October 7, it will impose a surcharge on container shipments from Northern Europe and the Mediterranean to Somalia and Tanzania. The fee will be $200 for a 20-foot dry container and $300 for 40-foot and 45-foot dry containers. This commercial charge applies to non-SPOT bookings and will remain in effect until further notice.
CMA CGM is also updating its PSS levels for multiple trades. From late September through mid-October, the carrier will apply surcharges on routes from China to various African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and South Africa. Specifically, shipments from China to Durban, South Africa, will face a $350 per TEU surcharge starting September 25. Additionally, CMA CGM will implement a €200 per TEU surcharge for refrigerated cargo moving from Europe to West Africa beginning October 1.
