Global maritime shipping rate and surcharge updates

Overview

Major global shipping companies have announced various new surcharges and pricing structures affecting multiple trade routes.

In late September, Maersk and CMA CGM introduced Peak Season Surcharges (PSS). Maersk announced fees for shipments from Northern Europe and the Mediterranean to Somalia and Tanzania, while CMA CGM implemented surcharges for routes from China to several African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and South Africa. CMA CGM also scheduled a surcharge for refrigerated cargo moving from Europe to West Africa.

Following these announcements, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) established new Freight All Kinds (FAK) rates for routes from the Far East to the Mediterranean, North Europe, and the Black Sea, effective late October. These rates include specific pricing for Moroccan ports such as Casablanca, Agadir, and Nador. MSC’s pricing structure incorporates several additional fees, including a ‘Piracy Risk Surcharge’ and a ‘Suez Canal Surcharge’ due to security concerns near the Arabian Peninsula, alongside fuel and carbon-related fees.
