Magallanes Region commemorates 506 years of history

The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region marked its 506th anniversary on October 21, commemorating the historic sighting of the strait that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans by Ferdinand Magellan's expedition in 1520.

The anniversary highlighted the region's strategic importance in science, environmental conservation, and expedition tourism, featuring landmarks such as Torres del Paine National Park and the Punta Arenas Municipal Cemetery. During an extraordinary session of the Regional Council, communicator and former basketball referee Patricio Mladinic Centurione was honored as an Illustrious Citizen of Magallanes.

Regional Presidential Delegate Ericka Farías Guerra emphasized the territory's role as a bicontinental gateway and a fundamental pillar for Chilean sovereignty.
