Magallanes Region historical commemorations
Overview
The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region held several events to honor its history. On October 21, the region marked its 506th anniversary, commemorating the 1520 sighting of the strait connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans by Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition. The anniversary highlighted the territory’s strategic importance for science, environmental conservation, and Chilean sovereignty.
Following this, the region held its 13th Regional Cultural Heritage Day. This event included over 50 activities across Punta Arenas, Natales, Cabo de Hornos, and San Gregorio. Activities focused on the Chiloé community’s legacy and the bicentennial of the Tantauco Treaty. In Punta Arenas, students from the University of Magallanes conducted a memory intervention at the Plaza de los Derechos Humanos to engage the community in discussions regarding the history of the Colón 636 site, a former center for political detention and torture.
