Magalys Pedrero recognized as FAO Women Hero in agriculture

Magalys Pedrero Basulto, a producer from Camagüey, Cuba, has been named one of the ‘100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development’ by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Recognized during the World Food Forum in Rome, Pedrero Basulto was selected from over 600 candidates representing approximately 131 countries. The honor highlights her leadership of the Centro organopónico in Camagüey, a production site noted for its ability to maintain consistent, year-round food production despite challenges regarding energy and resources.

Her work exemplifies the Cuban model of urban and suburban agriculture, which focuses on sustainable local food production and reducing transport footprints. The recognition coincides with 2026 being designated as the International Year of Women Farmers, an initiative aimed at highlighting women's roles in biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and rural economic development.
