FAO recognition of global women agro-food heroines
Overview
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has named 100 women as part of its recognition of global heroines for agro-food systems and rural development. Announced on World Food Day, this initiative precedes the UN-declared International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 and aims to promote gender equality and better access to land, technology, and markets.
In Costa Rica, Olga Vargas of Ujarrás was honored for her use of sustainable practices and climate change adaptation. Supported by a joint FAO and UNICEF project, Vargas implemented soil management and reforestation efforts that protected a local spring and enabled her to expand guava production and tilapia fingerling production.
Other honorees include Chilean Huilliche farmer Cecilia Guineo Colguen, recognized for preserving ancestral seeds. In Brazil, artisanal fishers Joana Rodrigues Mousinho and Luena Pataxó were recognized for their leadership in the fishing sector and mangrove protection. The list also includes Teresa Mariz from Angola, representing a global group of women driving innovation and biodiversity protection.
During the World Food Forum in Rome, Magalys Pedrero Basulto, a producer from Camagüey, Cuba, was also named to the list. Selected from over 600 candidates representing approximately 131 countries, Pedrero Basulto was recognized for her leadership of the Centro organopónico in Camagüey. Her work highlights the Cuban model of urban and suburban agriculture, maintaining consistent, year-round food production despite resource and energy challenges.
