MagentaTV to premiere documentary on ancient Athenian democracy

MagentaTV is set to premiere a new two-part international documentary series titled ‘The Cradle of Democracy’ on October 18 at 21:00 on Magenta History. Directed by Florence Tran, the series explores the origins and functioning of ancient Athenian democracy 2,500 years ago.

The production examines the foundations of modern political systems by investigating the Ancient Agora, where citizens once gathered for legislation and justice. The series features archaeological research and attempts to reconstruct the lottery system, a key mechanism used to ensure the fair distribution of power and limit corruption. Archaeologists, including Liliane Lopez-Rabatel and Greek sculptor Panagiotis Zestanakis, aim to recreate this lost mechanism using ancient techniques.

The documentary includes contributions from renowned experts such as John Camp, Vincent Azoulay, Stella Chrysoulaki, Dimitris Plantzos, and Paul Cartledge. The series is a co-production by YUZU Productions and Anemon Productions, in collaboration with MagentaTV, France Télévisions, and NOVA/GBH.
