Magic: The Gathering Hobbit Set Drives Card Price Spikes

The recent Magic: The Gathering (MTG) Hobbit crossover has caused notable price movements in the secondary market. The red enchantment Rain of Riches, featured on the Smaug the Magnificent commander, surged 200‑300% since early July, while the elf card Elves of Deep Shadow and the Modern‑era card Plunge into Darkness also saw sharp increases. At the same time, Wizards of the Coast released the Secret Lair x The Hobbit: Smaug’s Spoils, a five‑card set of reprinted staples such as Lightning Greaves and Sol Ring. Although the base card values are modest (the most expensive at about $4), the Secret Lair packaging could add a markup, bringing the set’s total estimated value to roughly $35 against a $29.99 price tag.
