Kenya intensifies anti-corruption crackdown across judicial and police sectors

Kenya is seeing a surge in anti-corruption enforcement across various sectors. In the judiciary, a court clerk in Busia was arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly demanding Sh180,000 to influence a criminal case. Additionally, suspended Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi of the Kangema Law Courts has been charged with receiving a Ksh150,000 bribe to secure a favorable sentence; he has denied the charges and was released on an Sh800,000 bond.

In the law enforcement sector, the EACC arrested two police officers attached to the Kenya Power Coast Regional Office for allegedly demanding a Ksh100,000 bribe from a resident. Meanwhile, in Nakuru County, six officials face charges related to an alleged irregular Ksh50 million land procurement deal intended for a health centre.

On the international front, the Director of Public Prosecutions has initiated extradition proceedings against Chen Guang, a Chinese national. Guang is wanted in Uganda for an alleged Ksh151 million fraud involving the manipulation of financial documents at Diamond Steel Uganda Limited. He was apprehended at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport upon arrival from Zimbabwe.
