Kenya anti-corruption enforcement actions
Overview
Kenya is experiencing an intensification of anti-corruption enforcement led by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) across judicial, law enforcement, and local government sectors. Initial enforcement actions targeted the judiciary and police, including the arrest of a court clerk in Busia for allegedly demanding bribes and the charging of a suspended Senior Principal Magistrate in Kangema. Law enforcement actions included the arrest of two police officers in the Coast Region and the charging of six officials in Nakuru County regarding an irregular Ksh50 million land procurement deal. Additionally, the Director of Public Prosecutions initiated extradition proceedings for a Chinese national wanted in Uganda for alleged fraud. Investigations have expanded significantly into county-level procurement and bribery. In Turkana County, the EACC arrested three suspects linked to Sh92.05 million in irregular dealings occurring between the 2013/2014 and 2024/2025 financial years. These investigations involve allegations of money laundering, conflicts of interest, and the unlawful acquisition of public property. Recent operations have continued to target various sectors. In Kwale, two Kenya Power security officers were arrested for allegedly demanding a Ksh100,000 bribe to prevent legal action regarding illegal electricity use. In Bungoma, two county government Law Enforcement and Compliance officers were arrested for allegedly demanding bribes from a cyber café operator to avoid business closure. Further judicial enforcement has seen the arrest of two court staff members in separate bribery cases. In Eldoret, a Court Assistant was arrested for allegedly soliciting and receiving Ksh20,000 to facilitate a stay order to stop a land auction. In Nakuru, a court process server was arrested for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe to provide a complainant with a convenient mention date for a case. New enforcement actions have also targeted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
