Magnesium and melatonin: understanding their distinct roles in sleep and stress
Magnesium and melatonin are frequently used to address sleep and stress, but experts emphasize they serve different biological functions. Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. It aids relaxation by helping to lower muscle tone and supporting normal nervous system function. However, its benefits are most notable when dietary intake is insufficient, as stress can increase magnesium excretion through urine.
In contrast, melatonin is a hormone that regulates the biological clock. It is primarily effective for addressing circadian rhythm disruptions, such as jet lag or shift work, rather than improving the depth of sleep itself.
Nutritionists recommend prioritizing magnesium-rich foods—such as pumpkin seeds, nuts, legumes, pure cocoa, and leafy greens—before turning to supplements. Experts warn against self-medicating, noting that if a diet already meets nutritional requirements, additional supplementation may not provide extra benefits.
