Junín region in Peru hit by series of earthquakes
A series of earthquakes has struck the Junín region of Peru, specifically impacting the Chupaca and Huancayo provinces. A magnitude 5.0 earthquake, centered near Chupaca, caused significant disruption, including injuries to at least 15 people and the collapse of numerous homes. Many of these structures, particularly adobe houses, had already been weakened by a prior magnitude 5.4 earthquake on July 18.
Damage reports indicate that over 125 homes have been rendered uninhabitable or destroyed, primarily in the Canipaco valley. The seismic activity has also triggered rockslides and landslides, affecting road infrastructure and blocking transit between various districts. Following the initial shock, subsequent tremors, including a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, have continued to unsettle the region.
The Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) has linked this ongoing activity to the reactivation of the Altos del Mantaro fault. Authorities have activated emergency protocols, and the government has announced plans to declare several districts in Junín and Huancavelica in a state of emergency to facilitate humanitarian aid and damage assessment.
