Seismic activity reported across Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador
Multiple seismic events were recorded across Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador between October 16 and 18, 2026.
In Mexico, the Servicio Sismológico Nacional reported two earthquakes in the early hours of Sunday: a magnitude 4.1 near Matías Romero, Oaxaca, at a depth of 130 km, and a magnitude 4.2 near Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, at a depth of 10 km. No damage or injuries were reported.
Peru experienced frequent seismic activity, including a magnitude 4.2 tremor near Quilca, Arequipa, and a magnitude 3.5 event in Oxapampa, Pasco. Other recorded movements included a magnitude 4.1 near the border of Piura and Ecuador. Authorities noted that the country's location on the Pacific Ring of Fire contributes to this constant activity.
In Ecuador, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred near El Triunfo, Guayas, at a depth of 63 km. Additionally, a magnitude 4.2 tremor was recorded in the Zamora Chinchipe province in the Amazon region. Local agencies continue to monitor these movements and advise citizens to maintain emergency preparedness.
