Magnitude 4.7 earthquake strikes Polewali Mandar, felt across South Sulawesi

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Polewali Mandar in West Sulawesi on 9 July 2026 at 08:09 WIB, at a depth of 13 km, according to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The epicentre was located about 50 km south of the district.

The tremor was reported with Modified Mercalli intensities III–IV in Majene, Polewali Mandar and Pare‑pare, and II–III in Sidrap, Mamuju, Makassar, Pangkep and Gowa, causing light shaking that was noticeable inside homes and occasionally woke residents at night. No damage or casualties were reported.
