Nusa Tenggara Timur earthquake hits 7.7 magnitude FAST-MOVING
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Nagekeo Regency in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) on Saturday morning, August 15, 2026. The epicenter was located in the sea, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Mbay, at a depth of 15 kilometers. The quake, attributed to the Flores back-arc thrust fault, was felt as far away as Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
Casualties and damage have been reported. In Maumere, Sikka Regency, at least one person died after being trapped under building debris at the Lorens Say Pier waiting room, and two others were injured. Other reports from Sikka indicate two fatalities and one injury at El Say Port. In Ruteng, Manggarai Regency, significant structural damage occurred, including the Ben Mboi Regional Hospital and the St. Paulus Catholic University campus.
The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning for several provinces, including NTT, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Tsunami waves were detected in several locations, with the highest reaching 0.94 meters in Maurole, Ende. While the tsunami early warning has since been lifted by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant against aftershocks and avoid damaged buildings. As of the latest reports, dozens of aftershocks have been recorded.
