Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Shakes Huánuco, Peru

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake was recorded on 2 August 2026 at 20:42 local time in the Huánuco region of Peru. The Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) located the epicenter 53 km northeast of Aucayacu in the Leoncio Prado province, at a depth of 152 km (intermediate focus).

The event produced a Mercalli intensity of III‑IV, described as light to moderate shaking, and was felt in the surrounding area. No major damage or casualties were reported. The IGP continues to monitor seismic activity in the region and has issued standard safety recommendations.
