Peru earthquake swarm and seismic risk updates

Overview

The seismic sequence that began with a magnitude 5.4 earthquake on 18 July 2026 in Junín province has caused significant regional impact, including the collapse of dozens of adobe homes and six deaths. The tremor destabilized Cerro Pucaá in Chupuro, leading the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) to warn of potential landslides, debris flows, and dust clouds during the rainy season. Following the initial event, a series of aftershocks and tremors occurred across Peru, including events in Ica, Chupaca, Camaná, Huaura, Puno, and Moquegua. Seismic activity persisted into August with a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in the Huánuco region and multiple tremors in Chupaca and Satipo. On 13 August, three earthquakes struck off the coast of Sechura in the Piura region, measuring 4.9, 4.0, and 4.1 magnitudes. The Navy's Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation reported no initial damage or tsunami threats. Hernando Tavera Huarache, head of the IGP, reiterated warnings regarding the central coast—specifically the area between Paracas and Huarmey, including Ica, Lima, and Áncash. Experts suggest this zone holds significant seismic potential that could eventually produce an earthquake between magnitude 8.5 and 8.8. In response to ongoing risks, Peru conducted the II National Multi-Hazard Drill on 14 August. Led by President Keiko Fujimori, the exercise simulated a magnitude 8.8 earthquake and tsunami for Lima and Callao, utilizing the SISMATE mobile alert system. Regional scenarios included vertical evacuations in coastal areas, landslide simulations in the highlands, and flooding preparations in the jungle. In Tacna, the drill simulated an 8.0 magnitude earthquake and a 15-meter tsunami. Recent assessments from Cenepred and Indeci indicate that 82% of the population in Lima and Callao is exposed to seismic risk. Structural vulnerabilities, such as self-construction and the use of ‘pandereta’ bricks in load-bearing walls, pose severe threats.
