Magnitude 6.1 Offshore Earthquake Shakes Italy's Calabria Coast, No Casualties

A magnitude‑6.1 earthquake struck offshore the southern Italian region of Calabria on 2 June at 00:12 local time. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) recorded the quake at a depth of about 58 km, with the epicenter roughly 62 km west of the Calabrian shoreline.

The tremor was felt across Calabria and in neighbouring regions including Sicily, Campania and Apulia. No injuries or significant damage have been reported. Authorities are monitoring the situation, noting that the quake’s depth reduced the risk of severe surface impacts.

The event follows earlier deep quakes in the area, such as a strong offshore shock near Naples in March and a 5.1‑magnitude tremor in the Ionian Sea in January that was felt as far as Malta. Italy remains one of the most seismically active countries in Europe due to its position at the complex boundary between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
