Magnitude 7.2 earthquake off Iwate, Japan triggers shindo 6+ tremors in Aomori and is felt in Tokyo

On 25 June, a powerful under‑sea earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan. The event was later revised to a magnitude of M7.2 (Mw 7.2, Mww 6.9, Mwp 7.0) with a depth of about 44 km. Shindo intensity reached 6+ in Hashikami and 6‑ in Hachinohe, causing people to lose balance and some unsecured objects to overturn. The shaking was also felt in Tokyo, where residents reported mild motion.

The Japanese government activated an emergency response cell immediately after the quake. Railway services in the affected region were suspended, while nearby nuclear facilities reported no anomalies. No tsunami warning was issued, as the offshore rupture did not generate significant sea‑level displacement. Local authorities in Aomori and Iwate opened disaster‑response centers to assess damage and coordinate rescue efforts.
