Magnus Carlsen defends Esports World Cup chess title

Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his chess title at the 2026 Esports World Cup in Paris. The Norwegian Grandmaster secured the championship by defeating Denis Lazavik in straight sets during the Grand Final.

Carlsen completed the tournament undefeated, recording 11 wins and nine draws. His victory earned him a $250,000 first-place prize and contributed 1,000 Club Championship points to Team Liquid, moving the American esports organization to 13th in the standings.

The 35-year-old has maintained a position as the world’s number one-ranked chess player for 15 consecutive years, a record in modern FIDE history. Carlsen, a five-time world classical chess champion, expressed a methodical approach to the competition, stating he focuses on taking things step by step rather than expecting victory.
