Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his title at the 2026 Esports World Cup in chess, held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Representing Team Liquid, the Norwegian grandmaster remained undefeated throughout the tournament, which featured 22 top players competing in a rapid chess format with ten-minute time controls.

In the final, Carlsen defeated Belarusian player Denis Lazavik with a 3-1 score in the individual matches to secure the championship and a 250,000 euro prize. Lazavik finished in second place, earning 171,000 euros, while Hikaru Nakamura took third place with 130,500 euros.

The chess section of the event featured a total prize pool of 1.5 million euros. The tournament structure included a play-in phase, a group stage, and a knockout playoff, highlighting the growing integration of traditional strategy games into the modern esports competitive landscape.
