Hungarian National Bank faces investigations into fund management and real estate

Former Hungarian National Bank (MNB) Governor György Matolcsy has released a video addressing controversies surrounding the bank's foundations and the use of public funds. Matolcsy denied claims that he ever stated the assets within MNB foundations had lost their status as public money, attributing such statements to a legal argument used in a court case and a rejected legislative proposal. He clarified that while the funds are considered public money subject to State Audit Office oversight, they did not originate from tax revenues but rather from banking operations, specifically citing profits from the 2014 foreign currency loan conversion.

Simultaneously, the MNB's new leadership, headed by Mihály Varga, has initiated investigations into previous management. This includes a formal report alleging the devaluation of real estate assets and potential mismanagement involving several properties, such as the Pallas Athéné Conference Center. The investigation aims to address concerns regarding overvalued investments and significant financial losses.

Further scrutiny has been applied to the bank's contracting practices. Data obtained by Transparency International reveals that the MNB entered into approximately 269 contracts worth nearly 21 billion HUF over the past 18 months, with several major recipients being entities linked to politically connected figures.
