Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party suffered its first notable dip in support after the government’s attempted nomination of chess grandmaster Judit Polgár for the presidency failed. A Publicus Institute poll recorded the party’s backing falling from 73 % to 68 % among guaranteed party voters, while a Medián survey showed support slipping from 61 % in May to 57 % in July. In the same period, Magyar’s personal approval dropped from 72 % to 62 % in the Medián poll. Opposition party Fidesz saw a modest rise, with its share climbing from around 20 % to 23 % in the Publicus poll. The nomination process drew criticism for lacking public consultation; roughly two‑thirds of Hungarians expressed dissatisfaction, and about 60 % of Tisza voters were discontent. Only 33 % of respondents regarded Polgár as a suitable candidate, and she publicly declined the offer. Analysts linked the decline to this “communication error,” describing it as the end of the government’s “honeymoon” period.
