Maharashtra FDA launches digital platform to combat food adulteration
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a dedicated Festival Enforcement Portal to combat food adulteration and ensure safety during high-demand festive periods. The new digital platform allows for coordinated enforcement, enables community food organizers to submit event details online, and provides a mechanism for consumers to report suspected safety violations.
To manage resources effectively, the department is implementing a risk-based inspection system, directing manpower toward locations most vulnerable to violations. The portal covers various festivals throughout the year, categorized into statewide, regional, and local levels to determine the necessary scale of inspections.
In a related push for public health, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has emphasized the importance of strict adherence to food safety regulations to combat the rise of lifestyle diseases. Mundhe noted that the increasing prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac ailments is linked to dietary habits and non-compliance with existing laws. Since his appointment in May 2023, the FDA has conducted thousands of audits on hotels, dairies, and food production units, resulting in license suspensions and the seizure of unsafe products.
