Maharashtra FDA food safety crackdown
Entities: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration · Devendra Fadnavis · Bhiwandi building collapse · Bombay High Court · Tukaram Mundhe
Overview
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration’s food‑safety drive that began in early July 2026 progressed through the month. After suspending licences of several Mumbai eateries and shutting down Aqsa Bakery in Moshi, the regulator widened its scope. On 31 July inspectors examined the canteens inside the Bombay High Court and prepared a compliance report for senior officials. In the same inspection round, licences of five Mumbai clubs, including the Cricket Club of India, were suspended for hygiene violations, and the BMC headquarters canteen was sealed after a fly was found in buttermilk. Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe also ordered a ban on the sale of chocolates, chips and cold drinks within 50 metres of schools throughout Maharashtra. These actions reinforce earlier mandates for free safe drinking water, strict pest‑control, segregation of vegetarian and non‑vegetarian food, and overall adherence to the Food Safety and Standards Act across the state.
