Maharashtra FDA food safety and advertising crackdown

Overview

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration’s food‑safety drive, launched in early July 2026, has continued to expand its scope. After the July 9 suspension of the historic K. Rustom ice‑cream parlour in South Mumbai for live rats, flies, expired stock and missing records, the regulator halted licences of three further eateries – Shalimar Hospitality, Noor Mohammadi Hotel and Rehmania Restaurant – on July 14 for serious hygiene breaches. On July 20 the agency ordered the immediate closure of Aqsa Bakery in Moshi after the outlet scored 1 out of 88 on safety standards. By late July, the FDA intensified inspections of Bombay High Court canteens and suspended the licences of five Mumbai clubs, including the Cricket Club of India. Additionally, the BMC headquarters canteen was sealed after a fly was discovered in buttermilk, and Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe issued an order banning the sale of chocolates, chips and cold drinks within 50 metres of schools. Following a Bombay High Court order on August 2 regarding government facilities, the FDA broadened its remit. Consequently, the Bombay Bar Association canteen received a stop‑business order for operating without a valid FSSAI licence. On August 7, the regulator imposed stricter licensing, infrastructure, and testing requirements on all state‑licensed blood centres and ordered the shutdown of two hostel messes at IIT Bombay. By mid-August, the crackdown extended to major international chains, including the suspension of four Domino’s Pizza outlets. Other multinational brands, such as KFC, Subway, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and Burger King, received improvement notices following intensive kitchen inspections. On August 15, Commissioner Mundhe targeted the quick-commerce sector, resulting in the suspension of 14 food business licenses, including five each for Blinkit and Zepto, and two for Swiggy Instamart.
