Maharashtra FDA intensifies food safety crackdown across multiple sectors
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has launched an intensive statewide crackdown on food safety violations, targeting various sectors including quick-commerce, celebrity endorsements, and educational institutions.
In the quick-commerce sector, the FDA suspended licenses for 12 warehouses operated by Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart following inspections that revealed pest infestations, spoiled produce, and poor hygiene. The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation has since called for a uniform regulatory framework for these dark stores.
Regulators have also targeted celebrity endorsements, issuing show-cause notices to actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff. The FDA alleges their Vimal Elaichi advertisement serves as surrogate promotion for prohibited pan masala products, a violation that could incur fines of up to Rs 10 lakh.
Additionally, the FDA is enforcing licensing requirements for approximately 2,700 school kitchens and has announced a 'mission mode' crackdown on eateries near educational institutions. While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has publicly backed these enforcement actions, the Bombay High Court recently criticized the regulator for 'going overboard,' ordering the FDA to pay Rs 5 lakh in compensation to a Pune sweet shop whose license was kept suspended despite 98 percent compliance.
