Maharashtra FDA suspends food licenses in Mumbai crackdown

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an extensive crackdown on food safety violations across the state, resulting in the suspension of numerous food licenses in Mumbai. As part of a statewide enforcement drive, the FDA suspended 11 food establishment licenses, including five outlets at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) premises. The affected MCA outlets include the Permit Room, Pavilion, Mediterranean, Oriental Swing, and Clubway & Pastry Counter. Inspections revealed significant deficiencies in hygiene, food handling, storage, refrigeration, and sanitation.

Major brands have also been targeted in this campaign. The FDA suspended the license of a McDonald's outlet in Colaba due to hygiene lapses and pest infestations. Additionally, the crackdown has included the suspension of permits for several Domino's and Pizza Hut outlets. The enforcement drive, led by state food safety commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has involved over 3,000 raids since May. The inspections have uncovered issues ranging from expired food and deteriorated raw materials to the presence of pests like cockroaches and rats in kitchens.

This aggressive regulatory approach has gained significant public attention. While the FDA has faced scrutiny regarding whether its enforcement is selective, the commissioner has maintained a strict stance, stating that those who fail to comply will face regulatory consequences to protect public health.
