Maharashtra sugar mills face production decline due to drought

The 2026-27 sugarcane crushing season has commenced in Maharashtra, with 55 mills already operational as of October 13. While the state government has authorized crushing to accelerate from October 15, industry experts warn of a significant decline in sugar production.

Despite an increase in total sugarcane cultivation area, severe drought and prolonged dry spells have impacted crop quality. In some districts, such as Dharashiv, approximately 18,000 hectares of sugarcane are reportedly unfit for crushing due to water scarcity. Experts estimate that total crushing and sugar production could decrease by 20% to 25% compared to the previous season.

Mill managements are facing challenges regarding cane weight and availability. To mitigate these risks, mills are focusing on mechanization, with 2,720 harvesters available across the state, and are preparing to secure supply through improved logistics and potentially sourcing cane from outside their designated command areas. Due to the expected shortage, the crushing season may conclude as early as late February, two months earlier than the previous year.
