Maharashtra drought impact on sugarcane production

Overview

The sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra has commenced, but industry experts warn of a potential 20% to 25% decline in sugar production compared to the previous season. Although the total cultivation area has increased, severe drought and prolonged dry spells have compromised crop quality. In districts like Dharashiv, approximately 18,000 hectares of sugarcane are reportedly unfit for crushing due to water scarcity.

To manage these shortages, mills are increasing mechanization and may source cane from outside their designated areas. The crushing season is expected to conclude as early as late February, two months earlier than last year. Additionally, political figures have estimated that drought conditions have caused farmers in the state losses between 85,000 and 90,000 crore rupees in production costs alone.
