Maharashtra voter list revision may exclude 2.07 crore people

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra has announced that approximately 2.07 crore voters, representing about 21.15 percent of the state's total electorate, may be removed from the upcoming draft electoral roll. This follows the completion of the first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026.

During the door-to-door verification campaign conducted between June 30 and August 17, 2026, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) categorized the uncollected enumeration forms into the 'ASDD' group: Absent, Shifted, Deceased, or Duplicate. The breakdown includes 76.80 lakh permanently shifted residents, 75.52 lakh absent or unverified individuals, 34.81 lakh deceased persons, and 17.63 lakh duplicate entries.

Significant numbers of potential removals were noted in Pune (28.70 lakh), Thane (28.61 lakh), Mumbai Suburban (26.63 lakh), Nagpur (14.44 lakh), Nashik (10.29 lakh), and Mumbai City (9.52 lakh). To ensure transparency, district administrations uploaded the lists of potentially excluded voters to district collector websites, allowing political parties to review the data. The draft electoral roll is scheduled for publication on August 24, 2026, with a period for claims and objections open until September 23, 2026.
