Mahindra and Tata unveil new subcompact SUV models for India by 2027

Mahindra & Mahindra has filed a design patent in India for its upcoming off‑road electric SUV, the Vision T (also referred to as the Thar EV). Built on the company’s NU_IQ modular platform, the vehicle will support ICE, hybrid and full‑electric powertrains and feature a boxy, modern design, panoramic sunroof, digital instrument cluster, OTA updates and advanced safety equipment. The design suggests a production model close to the concept, with a length of about 4.3 m, and it is expected to enter production in late 2026 or early 2027.

Tata Motors is developing two new sub‑4 metre SUVs. The “Scarlet”, codenamed internally, will use a monocoque chassis and may offer a range of petrol, diesel and possibly hybrid engines, with a target market launch in the second half of 2027. A next‑generation Tata Nexon is also planned, moving to a new platform, adopting a fresh design language and upgraded interior while retaining existing engine options. Both manufacturers aim to expand their subcompact SUV line‑ups in the fiercely competitive Indian market through 2026‑2027.
