Commercial vehicle industry faces intense electric truck competition

The commercial vehicle industry is undergoing a significant shift toward electrification, characterized by intense competition between European and Chinese manufacturers. At the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hannover, Mahle CEO Arnd Franz described the race for electric trucks as a ‘competition of giants,’ noting that while China dominates the battery supply chain, European engineering and established service networks remain critical advantages.

Global trends show a massive divergence in adoption rates. The market for battery-electric trucks (BET) grew by 1,800% between 2021 and 2025, while diesel truck markets declined. China leads this transition, producing 95% of the world's electric trucks, supported by government incentives and specialized infrastructure. In contrast, Europe and the US face slower adoption due to insufficient charging infrastructure and regulatory uncertainties.

Industry leaders, including VDA Chief Hildegard Müller, have called on policymakers in Berlin and Brussels to accelerate the development of charging networks and hydrogen refueling stations to support a climate-neutral freight industry. While technological advancements in vehicle range and charging speed are progressing, logistical hurdles such as grid connections and high investment costs remain significant barriers for freight companies.
