Moldova faces fuel shortages and drone incursions
Moldova is facing several energy and security challenges. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu reported that while gasoline reserves are sufficient for approximately 15 days, diesel reserves have dropped to between 5 and 6 days. Supply issues are being exacerbated by difficult navigation on the Danube, forcing importers to use alternative routes through the Leușeni border point.
Regarding electricity, Junghietu noted that a tariff increase cannot be ruled out, pending the finalization of average purchase costs for August. Regional price pressures are being driven by power capacity shutdowns in Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, alongside high temperatures increasing demand. Meanwhile, the Vulcănești–Chișinău 400 kV power line project is nearing completion, with expected commercial operation around August 27. This infrastructure is intended to facilitate energy imports from Romania and the European market.
On the security front, President Maia Sandu has accused Russia of intentionally sending drones into the airspace of Moldova and neighboring countries, including Romania and Poland. Sandu stated that while some incursions may be accidental, others are deliberate tests of regional reaction capabilities. She emphasized that diplomatic protests and the expulsion of the Russian ambassador are unlikely to change Moscow's policy, suggesting that increased support for Ukraine is the most effective response.
