Maia Sandu visits Budapest to discuss EU integration and security
Moldovan President Maia Sandu conducted her first official visit to Budapest, meeting with Hungarian President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The discussions focused on Moldova’s European integration, specifically the steps required to open the final two negotiation chapters with the European Union.
Regional security was a primary topic, including Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression and the impact of Russian hybrid threats. President Sandu highlighted repeated violations of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones and missiles.
Economic cooperation and energy security were also addressed. Sandu encouraged Hungarian companies to invest in Moldova, while officials discussed diversifying energy sources, regional interconnection, and the potential for expanding direct air links between Chișinău and Budapest. The visit coincided with commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
