Moldova European Union accession and diplomatic efforts
Overview
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has engaged in several high-level diplomatic visits to advance the country’s European Union integration and regional security.
In Helsinki, Sandu met with Finnish President Alexander Stubb to discuss bilateral relations and Moldova’s path toward EU membership. Sandu proposed a structured dialogue with Finland focused on resilience and civilian preparedness, drawing on Finnish security models.
Sandu also traveled to Budapest to participate in commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. During this visit, she held meetings with Hungarian President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar to discuss economic cooperation, regional security, and EU accession. Discussions in Budapest specifically addressed the steps required to open the final two negotiation chapters with the European Union. Sandu also highlighted regional security concerns, including Russian hybrid threats and repeated violations of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones and missiles. Economic talks included encouraging Hungarian investment, diversifying energy sources, and potentially expanding direct air links between Chișinău and Budapest.
As of late October, Moldova has officially opened negotiation chapters for ‘Internal Market’ and ‘Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth,’ bringing its total number of open chapters to 24 out of 33.
