Maine Democrats Seek New Senate Nominee After Graham Platner Withdrawal
U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner dropped out of the Maine race after a former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault. The Democratic Party quickly moved to select a replacement before the July 27 filing deadline.
Eight candidates participated in a televised debate on July 17, including former state Senate President Troy Jackson, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former public‑health official Nirav Shah and trans‑identifying activist Ashley Webb. The debate highlighted the candidates' attacks on Republican Sen. Susan Collins and on former President Donald Trump, while exposing varying levels of policy knowledge.
The party will decide the nominee at a convention of 601 delegates on July 25 in Bangor. Governor Janet Mills declined to endorse any candidate, and senior Democrats such as Senator John Fetterman publicly rebuked supporters of Platner. The selection process has drawn criticism for limiting voter input to party insiders.
Market analysis shows Democrats still hold a slight edge in the general election, with the race remaining competitive despite the turmoil caused by Platner’s exit.
