2026 Maine Senate race: Jackson nominated, Collins at center

Overview

After Graham Platner withdrew in early July, Maine Democrats coalesced around former Senate President Troy Jackson. County committees pre‑selected most of the 601 convention delegates, and Jackson secured pledges from 481 of them, delivering a decisive majority ahead of the Bangor state convention on July 25‑27. He defeated biopharma executive Saundra Pelletier and is now the Democratic nominee to challenge long‑time Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

A University of New Hampshire poll released July 20 showed Jackson leading Collins 49 % to 46 %; a later Reuters poll on July 23 reported the race essentially tied. The matchup has become a focal point for Senate control, with the chamber currently evenly split.

Collins is facing fresh criticism over her 2022 vote for a $70 billion ICE‑funding increase and her opposition to a body‑camera amendment. An ICE vehicle stop in Biddeford that resulted in the fatal shooting of Colombian immigrant Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero has intensified scrutiny, though Collins denounced the killing. A constituent praised her personal assistance after a family tragedy, highlighting a mixed public perception.

Jackson’s campaign attacks Collins on corporate tax breaks, Supreme Court appointments and social‑policy stances, while pledging to expand abortion access post‑Dobbs. Fundraising remains uneven—Collins commands an $11‑$12 million war chest, versus roughly $1.2 million raised by Jackson in his prior gubernatorial run. Both candidates are now poised for a decisive November showdown that could tip Senate majorities.
