Maine primary turnout surge gives Democrats edge in Senate and governor races

Maine’s June primary saw a significant increase in voter participation, with about 93% of expected ballots counted. Over 208,000 votes were reported in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, roughly 68,000 more than in 2018, while the Republican primary logged about 110,000 votes. Unenrolled (independent) voters, who make up about a third of the electorate, cast ballots at a 3‑to‑1 ratio for Democratic candidates, contributing roughly 12,140 Democratic absentee ballots versus just over 4,000 for Republicans. The heightened turnout was driven by the competitive Senate race to unseat long‑time Republican incumbent Susan Collins and a closely watched governor’s primary, prompting heightened grassroots organizing on both sides. Analysts cautioned that while turnout shows strong engagement, it could also lead to voter fatigue as campaigning intensifies.
